Lokrum

It is supposed that the name of this small island has been derived from the Latin word “acrumen” (sour fruit). In the southern part of the island there is a 10-meter deep salty lake, also known as the Dead Sea, and a castle, the abandoned Benedictine monastery with a church which was built in 1023.

From several little churches, the church of Annunciation and the chapel of St. Blaise, from the year 1557, have been preserved. In 1859 Archduke Maximilian of Habsburg bought Lokrum. Later, the island had several owners, and among the most famous ones was also Rudolf, the heir to the throne of Austria. Today, the island of Lokrum, which is still called the island of love and the island of lovers, is the favourite excursion centre for tourists and the citizens of Dubrovnik. Did you know that there are many mysteries and legends about the island of Lokrum…?

The legend about the Lokrum curse

According to the legend, French authorities decided to close the monastery in Lokrum and to banish the Benedictines. The Benedictines tried in every way they could to revoke the decision on the basis of their centuries-long presence at the island, but it was no use. The last night they spent on the island, they left the church of St. Mary after the divine service and in monk’s dresses with hoods on their heads and in a funeral march in single files they walked around the island three times with lit wax-candles, which they turned upside down as a sign of a curse.

The procession lasted for the whole night and the wax was dripping along the path while the priests were uttering the curse out loud: “Let every man who gets Lokrum for his own personal pleasure be cursed!” The Benedictines left the island at dawn without turning around or stepping on it ever again. Some say that the curse can be removed only if all wax drops from their wax-candles are joined again...

The Legend about Richard the Lionheart

In 1191, Richard the Lionheart, the king of England, caught in the storm when he was coming back from the Crusade, took a vow that if he survived the storm, he would built a church on the first place his leg stepped on! His ship was stranded on the island of Lokrum and the citizens of Dubrovnik convinced him of building a church in Dubrovnik instead of on Lokrum.

So, according to the legend, King Richard donated a large amount of gold which was used for building the cathedral in Dubrovnik.
